So, after lots of research and discussions, the most likely "50ft River Steamer, with small cabin for the engineer and his wife" listed as deck cargo on the Tayleur... was something like this.
And a suitable scale model version will be included on the poop deck of my finished Tayleur build.
Thanks all.

Good question, but a very difficult one.
If you were the one coming up with the questions of the day instead of the AI, we wouldn't have such high percentages, hahahahahah.

What an awesome project, but yeah, a lot of intricate work to achieve the best result by the looks of it.
The man at Kitwood kindly sent me a copy of the instructions for my little river steamer model, which I have attached to help illustrate your point
Thanks for that,

Avoca, I totally agree with you! The precision of these models is superb, and there are some good build videos online to help with the assembly.
My personal favorite is the one I purchased, the **C.R. Lamb Sternwheeler**. What I can say about these kits is that they are beautifully designed, with an impressive level of detail and accuracy.
However, speaking from my own experience, don't let their beauty and quality fool you! Be prepared to do a lot of work with tweezers because many of the parts are absolutely tiny, especially on the sternwheeler.
I've opened the box several times to examine the parts and study the instructions, but I must confess that I still get a little intimidated by those miniature pieces! 😂
This is going to be a long build, and it will require plenty of patience and, most importantly, a very steady hand. But I have a feeling the finished model will be well worth the effort!

Sarà una costruzione lunga, e richiederà molta pazienza e, soprattutto, una mano molto ferma. Ma ho la sensazione che il modello finito varrà sicuramente lo sforzo!<a class="nb-mention nb-user-hover" href="https://it.model-boats.com/user/Avoca" data-nb-profile="{"username":"Avoca","avatarUrl":"https:\/\/it.model-boats.com\/media\/179005848689\/s","avatarFallbackUrl":"https:\/\/it.model-boats.com\/media\/site\/profile.svg","profileUrl":"https:\/\/it.model-boats.com\/user\/Avoca","countryCode":"AU","countryName":"Australia","flag":"🇦🇺","flagUrl":"https:\/\/it.model-boats.com\/media\/site\/flags\/4x3\/au.svg","lastOnline":"4 ore fa","rankTitle":"Sottufficiale","rankIconUrl":"https:\/\/it.model-boats.com\/media\/site\/ranks\/9.png","rankEmojiText":"","rankPoints":746,"membershipTier":"Basic"}">@Avoca
TBH Col, there are hundreds of the things still floating around.
But don't forget, the Murray River is ~2500 kms long, and takes in three States.
Then there's the Darling River, the Murrumbidgee River, the lakes of NSW, then the estuary systems around Sydney, etc. etc. etc...
So that's about 5,000 kms of just the Murray river bank one can tie up to. Plenty of room for them all.
Murray.

I was only able to find a reference to the 'Captain Sturt', a sternwheeler, which was/is(?) a full size paddle wheeler, not really a 50ft x 9ft River Steamer one could load onto the poop deck of a clipper, but still an interesting vessel.
Thanks agian.

Very interesting, thank you.
I hadn't considered the vessel was dismantled for transport.
I will check with my experts.
My expectation was, given the Tayleur's 98 ft x ~30 ft poop deck, it was just loaded as a full vessel and stored there.
Also, as there was no wreckage of the steamer recovered, the thought was it had simply 'launched' itself off the Tayleur as she went down.
And, I am very familiar with Echuca, Moama, Swan Hill, etc. etc. along the Murray's length, and there is a great deal of renewed interest in paddle boats by the tourism industry. But, these days, it is extremely commercialised and usually prohibitively expensive for local community members to enjoy.
FYI - a bit of local bias here. Mildura and surrounds is a low lying, flood plain, heavy clay based area, as per the previously attached wool barge photo. Whereas, Echuca, Moama, and Swan Hill are settled on river banks with steep cliff faces(as per attached,) far more difficult for loading/unloading boats, and not very child friendly for swimming. So, I don't really care for those locations.
Just a kid thing I guess.

I think we may have a winner.
Its actually part of a series of models for 0 gauge railway enthusiasts, and its simply listed as a '50ft River Steamer', which is exactly what the Tayleur freight manifest states.
Its 1/48th scale, the same as my build, so, check.
And, its ideal for Australian river use, its a stern wheel paddle steamer, not side wheel, which I had discounted.
I'll wait for the experts to confer, but I think it might just do the trick.

FYI - genuine paddle STEAMER enthusiasts.
The Paddle Steamer Melbourne is, as far as I know, the only genuine 'steamer' still operating on the Murray River, probably Australia wide actually.
The balance of operational PS's on the Murray are diesel powered, so more Paddle Boat than Paddle Steamer, which kind of dulls the whole experience in my opinion.
When I was a younger person, my friends and I would swim out to the Melbourne, climb the paddle housing and dive back into the river just for the hell of it.
The tourists were amazed, the Melbourne's staff - bloody ropeable!

Thanks, but at a reported 9ft wide(x 50ft) I can't see the 'river steamer' on the Tayleur having paddles.
So, with the guidance of the Tayleur experts, I have decided to use a vessel similar to the attached.
I'll certainly visit the site you suggested though, sounds interesting.
(Update: Great site, just joined, thanks)

Haha... I'm familiar with all the PSs you have listed, except for the Oscar W., and the model, of course.
Where I am from, Mildura, is pretty close to the middle of the navigable part of the Murray River, Australia's longest.
Due to inconsistent rainfall in inland Australia, a series of Locks and Weirs were created the length of the Murray, over time, to allow year-round trade, because there were very few roads at the time.
In fact, the early wool industry in Australia relied on paddle steamers, with their shallow draft and paddles, to get product to the export port of Adelaide and back to 'Blighty'.
The attached image is, in fact, of your Oscar W. towing a wool barge at the junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers, 30 ks from my hometown.
Also, of possible interest to you, as an American, with the consistent water level maintained by locks and weirs, a couple of crafty yanks arrived in Mildura, set-up a California type 'flood' irrigation system, with all steam driven pumping stations, and established a wine grape growing industry.
And, thanks to those crafty young fellows, the Chaffey Brothers, we have been kicking the butt of US wine ever since, and San Mateo Avenue is a major street in Mildura to this day.
So, thanks for that.
Oh, and we have also been kicking the butt of the UK wool industry ever since too.
So I guess a vote of thanks to the Colonial Govener of the day as well.

Update on the river steamer.
According to records just sent to me,
"... Starkey says the river steamboat was 50 feet long nine feet wide in its tiny cabin the engineer and his wife had their quarters..."
Thanks
Murray.
Grazie

The build I'm working on, the 1850's 'Clipper' Tayleur was loaded with 'deck cargo' along with 600 odd passengers.
Among the cargo was a a boat listed as a 'river steamer'.
(Also, a large quantity of headstones, 2 railway carriages with a quantity of track, a prefabricated house and surgery).
I grew-up on the Murray River and when I see 'river steamer' I think of Paddle Steamers, but this, surely, is much more punt like I would think.
So, fellow modellers, I ask, what type/size of vessel would most likely be classed, on a freight bill, as a 'river steamer' in 1854?
Or, more imporatantly, does anyone know where I can get a 1/48th scale model of one, any one.
Thanks
Murray.
Calling all 'river steamer' of the 1850's fans... please help.
Grazie
